Friday, February 15, 1901. Right of way.

The Right-of-Way Act was signed into law by U.S. President William McKinley permitting the Secretary of the Interior to grant rights of way through any federally owned-land, including the Indian reservations and the four national parks then in existence (Yellowstone, Sequoia, Yosemite, and Mount Rainier) if he found it to be "incompatible with the public interest".

Not good.

69 coal miners at the Wellington Colliery Company, near Cumberland, British Columbia, were killed in an explosion.  Over half of them were Japanese or Chinese immigrants.

Bluesman James "Kokomo" Arnold may have been born, assuming he wasn't born on this date in 1896.  He was famous for his intense slid guitar.

It was a Saturday.  Harpers looked back at the day, on its cover, when the Army enforced the law in Yellowstone National Park.

Friday, January 11, 1901. Theodore Roosevelt and the Mountain Lion.

Theodore Roosevelt engaged a mountain lion in hand to hand combat in Colorado.
Soon we saw the lion in a treetop, with two of the dogs so high up among the branches that he was striking at them. He was more afraid of us than of the dogs, and as soon as he saw us he took a great flying leap and was off, the pack close behind. In a few hundred yards they had him up another tree. Here I could have shot him (Tony climbed almost up to him, and then fell twenty feet out of the tree), but waited for Stewart to get a photo; and he jumped again. This time, after a couple of hundred yards, the dogs caught him, and a great fight followed. They could have killed him by themselves, but he bit or clawed four of them, and for fear he might kill one I ran in and stabbed him behind the shoulder, thrusting the knife you loaned me right into his heart. I have always wished to kill a cougar as I did this one, with dogs and the knife.

Tuesday, October 9, 1900. Auto 5.

John M. Browning was granted a patent for what would become the "self loading" Auto 5 shotgun, which would go into production in 1902.

A phenomenally successful shotgun, it blazed the trail for all later semi automatics.  It became so popular that Browning had trouble ceasing to offer it in its catalog even after it desired to do so.  The shotgun was manufactured in Belgium for Browning and also offered in the United States by Remington, as the Model 11.  Remington's production of Browning's design ceased in 1947, but FN's for Browning carried on until moved to the Japanese firm Miroku in 1975.  In 1998 full production finally ceased, with FN carrying on with commemoratives for one final year.

Primarily a hunting weapon, you'll oddly see a lot of inquiries on the net today about whether it saw military use.  It did, but mostly as a training weapons.  As great as it was, it's action was not suitable for combat conditions, although you'll occasionally see some that were used as police riot guns.

It still has a huge following.

Thursday, February 18, 1909. The first North American Conservation Conference.

President Theodore Roosevelt convened the first North American Conservation Conference at the White House.

The conference was between delegates of the US, Canada, and Mexico.

Oddly enough, Wallace Stegner was born on this day as well, in Lake Mills, Iowa.

Subsistence hunter/fisherman of the week. Albert Nelson

He was Wyoming's first game warden, hired in.1899.

While contrary to what is sometimes suggested, he occasionally had deputy game wardens in his three-year stint, his statewide, hands on, role was a monumental task.  He received funding at the amount of $1,200 per year, from which he had to pay himself and deputies who received $3.00 per day.
